Image Processing

Here are some quick pictures showing how some real electron micrographs of plasmodesmata (provided by Janine Radford have been processed in an attempt to bring out more useful detail.

Local Histogram Modification

This is an attempt to stretch the local contrast, and bring out any detail that may otherwise be insufficiently defined. The procedure to do this was written by myself using the 'explorer' package for SGI machines.

Polar Fourier Transforms

It is possible that plasmodesmata are sufficiently structured to display some form of rotational symmetry. Using a polar fourier transform, and filtering out the high frequency components, I hoped to emphasise any such symmetry. Unfortunately I used a step bandpass filter, and the results were not encouraging. Soon I hope to use a more forgiving bandpass filter, and see what happens.
